They can range from replies to or requests for information, enquiries, letters of complaint to personal recommendations or thank you letters.

The format for personal formal letters varies but a good layout where you cannot go far wrong is:

Space

Below this on the left the date.

Space

Under the date the recipient's name followed by their address.

Space

The salutation such as Dear Sirs

The subject of the letter in bold type or in capitals

The subject matter of the letter.

Sincerely or Yours Sincerely

A space for your signature

Your Initial and surname.

Here is an example of a personal formal letter.

An informal personal letter is similar except that the person's name is not shown with the address and the salutation is Dear followed by their name.

The signature at the end would also be a less formal wording with your christian name in the signature.

Whatever the type of letter it is important use good language, check the spelling and punctuation and reply or write promptly.
